Jill Sobule.

Singer-songwriter Jill Sobule makes her sixth appearance on Mountain Stage, recorded live on the campus of West Virginia University in Morgantown. Since first raising eyebrows with her hit "I Kissed a Girl" in the mid-'90s, Sobule has maintained a loyal following. In 2009, Sobule made news for helping pioneer the concept of fan-funded projects: She raised $75,000 from 500 fans to produce, record and promote her album California Years. That record featured the songs "A Good Life" and "Where Is Bobby Gentry," both of which are included in her set here.

Backed by members of the Mountain Stage band, Sobule also plays "Under the Bridge" from her latest project A Day at the Pass, an ongoing collaboration between Sobule and John Doe of the L.A. punk band X. Demonstrating that her ability to provoke discussion remains as strong as ever, Sobule also plays the new song "When They Say We Want Our America Back, What The ____ Do They Mean?" from her EP Hits From the Culture Wars.

This performance was originally published March 27, 2012.
