Now, if someone back in 1962 told you that the band would be still making music in 2012, you'd think them crazy. But I'm here now to tell you that you'll be able to see The Beach Boys perform in 2062.
At the Beacon Theater, as part of the group's 50th-anniversary tour, I expected a decent show. What I got was fabulous: Nobody owns harmonies in rock music like The Beach Boys. Not The Beatles, not Crosby Stills and Nash, not Fleet Foxes. Grey Filastine, once based in Seattle but now a nomad loosely based in Barcelona, is a creative soul. He seems to also love a good party, a beat and a shopping cart wired for sound.
With that in mind, we asked Filastine to perform at a junkyard in Austin — not just any junkyard, either, but a place called "The Cathedral of Junk." It's a home for more than 60 tons of unwanted consumer has-been items, transformed into art installations by Vince Hannemann. The album cover features a drawing of the great mime on in action. The disc itself contains nineteen minutes of silence and a minute of applause on each side. Bravo! Brilliant! The album was released in 1970 by MGM Records as a joke record, of course. Thu, 22 Mar 2012 20:25:36 +0000 Bob Boilen 8798 at http://kenw.org Listening To The Best Of Marcel Marceau, On His Birthday
